Baltoro Concordia and Pastore Peak 6200 mtrs

Throne Room of the Mountain Gods

K-2 picIn the heart of the Karakorum’s of northern Pakistan lies an amphitheatre of high mountains which truly has no parallel. The American climber and photographer Galen Rowell described it as the ‘Throne Room of the Mountain Gods’, and when you stand at the glacial junction known as Concordia and survey the phenomenal array of summits which include four of the world’s 8000 meter peaks, it is difficult to disagree with him. Our route follows a stunning trail along the mighty Braldu River to the snout of the Baltoro Glacier. The spectacular rock walls of Trango Towers, Lobsang Spires and Uli Biaho stand like monolithic stone sentinels, guarding our route As we progress up the moraines of the vast Baltoro Glacier, the Muztagh Tower (7273m) and Masherbrum (7821m) slowly reveal themselves and in the distance Gasherbrum IV stands tall, providing a taste of what is to come. At last we reach Concordia (4650m) where we are surrounded by a plethora of peaks including four of the world’s 8000m peaks- K2, Broad Peak, Gasherbrum II and Hidden Peak. And others no less spectacular including the mighty Chogolisa, Golden Throne and Gasherbrum IV From our camp at Concordia we can trek up the Godwin Austen Glacier to K2 Base Camp and visit some of the expedition teams attempting to climb this formidable peak, This trek is undoubtedly one of the Great Walks of the World- the Karakorum’ answer to Everest Base Camp. Although this trek takes us into relatively remote and rough terrain, the walking days are not excessively demanding, and it is well within the capabilities of the regular hill walker wanting to experience wilderness trekking at its finest.

Requirements & Technicality

Pastore Peak is not a technical peak but you need good stamina for a long day effort while climbing it. You can climb Pastore Peak without any previous climbing experience and skills of using climbing equipment but knowledge on using equipment and previous experience would be beneficial although not mandatory because a pre-ice climbing training is provided to you in Base Camp to make you skillful on using climbing gears such as ropes, ice pick, harness, crampons.

Climbing usually requires normally 5-6 hours of walking everyday and some days even 8-10 hours- such as in summitting day. We suggest you to get prepared with about 12 Km of walking or jugging exercise everyday 3 months before the trip because on choosing this expedition you are going to be walking at high altitude and in a remote area for many days and more than five hours most of the days.

To join this expedition and have a good chance of success, you must have: Lots of willpower, ability to tolerate harsh conditions, reasonable fitness and stamina with sound health. It is vital that participants with pre-existing medical problems or conditions make these known to Ascent Explorers at the time of booking. Medical and evacuation expenses are the responsibility of the participant. It is also important that you consult your doctor for vaccination and other medical requirements for your trip.
