Garhwal Himalaya, India, Mt Saife (6161m) & MT Thelu (6002m)

Indian Himalayas

Mount Thelu and Mount Saifi are situated in the beautiful Gangotri National Park and the Garhwal Himalayan range is often referred to as mountaineer’s paradise, with breathtaking vistas and ample opportunities to climb.

What makes this particular route so special is the fact that it remains largely untouched by the tourism industry.  The landscape is still the same wonderful natural beauty as it was hundreds of years ago, and the mountains still have that wild magical aura as it would feel on an uncharted genuine exploration.

This location consists of huge areas where few mountaineers have ever visited, with an abundance of unclimbed virgin peaks and a range consisting of some of the primary peaks of the Garhwal region.  These include Mt. Shivling, Mt. Meru 1,2,3, Mt. Thalaysagar, Mt. Sudarshan, Mt. Bhrigupanth, Mt. Kedar Dome, Mt. Chaukhamba, Mt. Bhagirathi 1,2,3, and Mt. Satopanth.

Nearby, the Ganga is considered the most sacred River in India. The legend is that the Goddess Ganga descended on Earth from the heaven at Gangotri and so Gangotri is considered as source of Ganga. There is a temple at Gangotri dedicated to Mother Ganga and the actual source of the Ganga lies just 19 Kms from Gangotri at Gaumuk.

This trek follows the River upstream to the actual source at Gaumukh. Whether you are yearning for thrill and adventure or peace of mind, the Gangotri – Gaumukh – Raktvan (Base Camp for Mount Thelu & Mount Saifi) Trek is a once in a lifetime experience, allowing you to witness spectacular glaciers, craggy terrains, challenging passes and scenic meadows, all in one breathtaking package.

The original temple was constructed by the Gorkha General Amar Singh Thapa after his conquest of the Garhwal area! Every year people from all around the world visit this shrine. A number of Ashrams and Dharamshalas are located on the far side of the river. It is believed that Raja Bhagirath used to worship Shiva on a slab of rock “Bhagirath Shila” situated near the temple. Submerged in the river there is a natural Shivling where, according to mythology, Lord Shiva sat when he received the Goddess Ganga in his matted locks. A days trek takes one to Gomukh, the source of the mighty Ganges.

Day 5: Gangotri – Bhojwassa (3792) 14 kms trek/5-6 hrs)

From Gangotri one moves along the well formed  track towards Chirvasa, a small patch of Pine trees en route. The entire trek follows a parallel course along the roaring Bhagirathi River steadily gaining altitude with every step taken. Beyond Chirvasa the terrain becomes really desolate and barren. And the ground transforms to sandy and crumbly (a point en route called the silent zone is so fragile, that a loud noise or a thud might initiate a rockslide from above) The trek further to Bhojvasa is along a the path that slowly flattens out and dips suddenly to reveal Bhojvasa with a small temple and a potential campsite near the river. The  camp is set up near the  river. Afternoon free to explore the area and to enjoy excellent sunset on Bhagirathi group of peaks. Dinner and overnight stay in tents.
